When asked why they take probiotics, 54% of respondents said gut/health digestion, which was followed by immunity health at 28%, regularity at 16%, microbiome health at 14% and source of fiber at 10%. When respondents were asked why they take prebiotics, the percentages were 38% for gut/health digestion, 26% for immunity health, 17% for regularity, 15% for microbiome health and 14%for antioxidant properties. Probiotics are live microorganisms that can provide health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts. They are commonly found in fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, and sauerkraut, as well as in dietary supplements.
Studies have shown that certain probiotics may help improve sleep quality by reducing the time it takes to fall asleep, increasing total sleep time, and reducing the number of awakenings during the night. Probiotics may also help regulate the body’s circadian rhythm, which is the internal “clock” that controls sleep-wake cycles.
One way that probiotics may improve sleep is by reducing inflammation in the body. Inflammation has been linked to a range of health problems, including sleep disorders. By reducing inflammation, probiotics may help improve sleep quality and promote better overall health.
Other potential mechanisms by which probiotics may improve sleep include reducing stress and anxiety levels, improving mood, and promoting the production of neurotransmitters that are important for sleep, such as melatonin.
