A new survey found that parents often use lullabies or white noise in their babies’ sleep routines. Most parents play white noise sounds, but some play lullabies to soothe their newborn at night. For parents who want to try implementing music as part of their baby’s sleep routine, experts recommend picking one song and sticking with it. According to a new survey, one method that seems to work well is playing soothing music to help lull the baby into sleep. Love to Dream, a swaddle company, collected responses from parents using a survey posted to the brand’s Instagram stories. The survey found that 77% of parents said that playing music as part of their bedtime routine actually improved their baby’s sleep. Of all the concerns that parents develop when they welcome a new baby, making sure both they and the baby get enough sleep likely tops the list. There is endless information from doctors and fellow parents out there about the right swaddles, sleep training methods, even room temperature and light levels. And yet, as the majority of parents of infants will tell you, sleep remains elusive. Gentle, repetitive rhythms and familiar tracks can calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and promote deeper, restorative sleep,” he said in the press release. And while parents might lean toward being experimental with different kinds of music to help their baby sleep, he recommends picking one song or style of white noise and sticking with it. “Playing the same soothing tracks each night helps babies associate the music with winding down, creating a clear sleep cue,” he said. If you’re the parent of an infant who is struggling with sleep, trying white noise or lullabies before bed might be worth trying. The first step, according to Dr. Heitner, is to select a song or white noise machine that plays music at 60 and 100 beats per minute, which mimics a normal heartbeat—just be sure to place any speakers or sound machines at least six feet (or about two meters) away from the baby’s crib.
