How Animals Choose To Snooze Penguins Take Thousands Of Tiny Naps A Day Walruses Go Without Sleep For 84 Hours

Chinstrap penguins take short naps thousands of times every day. They accumulate their daily sleep requirement of more than 11 hours in short bursts that are just four seconds on average. Penguins on the outside of the colony got longer and deeper bouts of sleep than those in the centre – which can be explained by the excess noise and physical bumping that occurs in the middle of a colony, or the heightened risk of nest material theft. penguins were successful at breeding led them to believe this was the case. The moments of neuronal silence during these short naps likely provided time for rest and recovery. When nesting, one parent penguin has to keep watch over the eggs, guarding them from predatory birds called skuas while their partners are away on foraging trips that last several days.
