Sleep paralysis is an intriguing and frightening phenomenon that affects many people around the world and is characterized by a temporary inability to move or speak upon waking or falling asleep. Furthermore, while some people may experience it once in their life, others may suffer from it recurrently. What is worse during sleep paralysis is that the senses and consciousness are intact, but it feels like pressure or a sensation of suffocation. It may be accompanied by hallucinations and intense fear. What is sleep paralysis? It is a sleep disorder in which the person is unable to perform voluntary movements, such as moving or speaking. It is an incomplete awakening that occurs in the transitions between sleep and wakefulness. More specifically, the person who suffers from it is cognitively awake, but experiences paralysis of all voluntary muscles, except for the eyes and breathing.
