The Infant Sleep Advice That Making You More Tired

If you’re trying to decode your baby’s sleep while running on very little rest, it can start to feel like everyone else’s baby is doing it “right” except yours. Social media clips, group chats, and well-meaning advice often make infant sleep sound like something you should be able to fix if you just find the right trick. Below are four common sleep expectations that quietly add pressure, and what actually supports rest in a way that works with your baby’s nervous system instead of against it. By six months, only about half of babies are sleeping an eight-hour stretch overnight. That means night waking is still common. In the early months, it is especially expected. Breastfed babies may wake more frequently because breast milk digests quickly and supports both growth and milk supply. Babies are noisy sleepers. Grunting, shifting, and short cries can all happen during active sleep. Responding immediately to every sound can sometimes disrupt a baby who is still asleep or about to resettle. A simple strategy that helps many parents is this: pause, then respond. Not to ignore, but to observe. That brief pause allows you to notice whether your baby is escalating or simply transitioning between sleep cycles. Many babies will settle again on their own if given a moment.
