Many people think that when they sleep, their brain is completely at rest and no learning or memory of any kind is possible. But the truth is that sleep supports our learning and memory in many important ways. While sleeping, our brain does many things that strengthen our ability to learn and remember. So the question arises—can we learn something new while sleeping? When we learn something new, sleep helps to solidify that information in the brain. This helps in remembering that information for a long time. During sleep, the brain decides which information may be useful in the future and stores it. But research found that if you listen to the words of a new language and their meanings while sleeping, then when you wake up, a “gut feeling” or unconscious understanding can be formed in your mind about those words. That is, you did not learn anything directly, but the brain made some connections. Many people believe that if they listen to an audiobook or lecture while sleeping, they can acquire new information without any effort. However, this idea is completely wrong. Science has proven that it is almost impossible to learn any complex information, such as new languages or science concepts, completely while sleeping.
