When this cat curls up to sleep, she holds her own tail-a small, soothing habit that’s melting hearts everywhere When this girl curls up to sleep she, for some odd reason, finds comfort in holding her own tail. That’s it. That’s all. But it’s so simple and almost thoughtful you can’t help being drawn in. It’s apparently a routine she’d invented to soothe herself, and she did it all on her own, with something that will always be with her. She’s a pretty smart girl. Cats are big on routine. Anyone who’s a cat parent can tell you that. Feeding times, biscuit-making times, nap times-these are all things that are typically nonnegotiable. Repetitive comfort behaviors like kneading, sucking, or even holding a tail can help signal their nervous system that it’s safe to relax. That, in turn, can help their immune system to operate properly, keep their heart rate down, stomach settled and overall health stronger. In times, these behaviors become habits because they work. The cat feels calmer and more secure, and since they’re equipped with “episodic memory,” they’re able to piece it all together, and file it away in their brain as part of a relaxation process. Nap time? I’ll hold my tail, that always makes me feel better. Or, I’ll make some biscuits. It then becomes automatic and less about thinking and more about habit.
