Physician weighs in on social media trend promising the perfect night of sleep. Physicians agree that proper sleep is important for cognitive functioning, mood, and overall health. Enter “sleepmaxxing,” the latest wellness trend that promises to maximize and optimize sleep. Currently circulating on social media, sleepmaxxing appears to promote strategies like keeping one’s mouth closed while sleeping, not drinking anything for a few hours before bed, showering at bedtime, eating a kiwi shortly before bed, setting a cold room temperature, ensuring a dark and quiet environment, using a white noise machine, and taking supplements For instance, a white noise machine may help some people achieve better sleep, though others may prefer their sleep space to be quieter, he noted. Also, keeping one’s mouth shut while sleeping may be more beneficial to someone’s partner (i.e., reducing noise from snoring) than for themselves. And though there is some data that suggests eating kiwi before bed may help to improve sleep efficiency, it is limited. As for taking a shower before bed, it can help to increase peripheral blood flow, enabling a person to cool down more quickly, Prabhakar explained, and a cooler body temperature can help a person to fall asleep. Beyond these measures, some people turn to beds and pillows that cost thousands of dollars in an effort to address sleep concerns, whether they are familiar with the sleepmaxxing trend or not. Setting a sleep time and wake time is also “very helpful,” he added. These times can be individualized based on whether someone is a night owl or an early riser. Though sleepmaxxing may not be the cure-all for optimal sleep, the trend does indicate that “more people are interested in improving their sleep, which is good,” Prabhakar said, adding that people should consult their physician directly if they have sleep concerns.
