Why Are We Still Calling Sleep Deprivation Normal For Babies

We’d never say that to someone recovering from surgery. Or managing a chronic condition. Or raising any other human in their most critical developmental window. But here’s the truth: chronic sleep deprivation in infancy isn’t normal. It’s just common. Babies don’t wake “just because.” They wake when something is off: Incomplete feeds, Overtiredness, Poor circadian alignment, Inconsistent routines, Too much or too little daytime sleep. When we meet babies’ age-appropriate feeding + sleep needs, things change. They sleep longer. More predictably. And so do you. Let’s stop calling exhaustion a rite of passage — and start calling it what it is: a signal that something’s not working. You deserve rest. So does your baby. And neither of you has to cry to get there.
