The 4-month sleep regression isn’t just a phase—it’s a permanent shift in how your baby sleeps. Before this, newborns mostly sleep in deep sleep, but now their cycles mature to resemble an adult’s, meaning they wake between light and deep sleep every 45-60 min. If your baby relies on rocking, feeding, or a pacifier to fall asleep, they’ll keep waking for it between cycles. It’s not a phase—it’s a sleep habit issue. Babies with external sleep props wake more often (Weinraub et al., 2012). Those with independent sleep routines have more consolidated sleep.
