The expert highlighted: “Electric blankets can be a great way to stay warm during colder months, but it’s important to use them with care. Simple steps like inspecting your blanket for damage, keeping it at a safe temperature, and never leaving it unattended can make all the difference in avoiding risks like overheating or fire hazards.” It’s easy to turn to these blankets as convenient warming tools during colder winter nights. This is especially an issue for diabetics, the elderly and people with poor circulation who may not be able to feel when the blanket is getting too hot. Instead, she recommended not keeping the blanket on for too long or turning it to a lower heat to avoid it overheating you or itself. Old, faulty and broken blankets are a massive fire risk too, as the expert urged people to watch out for frayed cords that can “spark a disaster” and avoid using it if the blanket looks too worn out in general. Similarly, it’s best to inspect your blanket for any breaks every time you use it and avoid tearing or spilling liquids across it when it’s on, as this could deliver a “nasty electric shock”
