Teenagers were not getting the eight to 10 hours of sleep per night needed for optimal functioning. Bad sleep is a really significant risk factor for a lot of things and probably the most serious is suicidality It’s particularly important for teenagers and adolescents because there’s still so much growing and developing that their brains and bodies are doing. Teenagers tend to get tired later in the evening than adults sleep a lot later as well, and won’t feel alert until later in the morning than the typical adult. “Their [teenagers’] peak in alertness is probably more likely to be 10am-ish, whereas for middle-aged adults, their peak in alertness is more likely to begin at about 8am teenagers could often catch up on some sleep during weekends, but not enough to offset the effects of regularly under-sleeping. light could help teenagers improve sleep patterns and quality during the week if their schedule couldn’t be adjusted. Try and wake up and immediately expose yourself to a natural light source, preferably by going outside that can help to shift circadian rhythms back a little bit Being able to participate more, not falling asleep throughout the class they would start staying up later. Extending school start times would almost certainly improve adolescent sleep.
